Tradition of the turn and heritage in the Convento de la Madre de Dios
The Convento de la Madre de Dios de la Piedad is a monumental complex of Dominican nuns located on the central Calle San José, founded at the end of the 15th century under the protection of Queen Isabella the Catholic. In its crypts and churches rest famous historical figures, among them direct relatives of Hernán Cortés.
The visit to the conventual church allows you to admire its spectacular Mudejar coffered ceiling and the Mannerist main altarpiece. Likewise, one of the most genuine experiences is to go to the workshop through the traditional wooden turn, where the cloistered nuns make and sell traditional sweets such as bizcochadas, amarguillos, and pestiños.
Access to the church is with free admission during morning worship hours. The workshop turn serves the public from Monday to Saturday from 10:00 AM to 1:30 PM, payable in cash according to the variety of pastries purchased.
