Visit to the Convento de San José del Carmen

The Monasterio de San José del Carmen, known popularly among Sevillians as *Las Teresas*, is a historic monastery of the Discalced Carmelite Order founded in 1575 by Saint Teresa of Jesus herself in the web of the Barrio de Santa Cruz. The building combines traces of a Renaissance palace with a careful baroque church.

In the conventual church of a single nave, you can admire the neoclassical high altarpiece presided over by the famous sculpture of San José con el Niño by Juan de Mesa (1620), along with valuable canvases by Herrera el Viejo. Likewise, the community guards exceptional relics such as the autograph manuscript of Las Moradas written by the Castilian saint and the only portrait from life painted of Saint Teresa by Fray Juan de la Miseria.

The temple can be visited before or after the usual services, opening its doors Monday to Saturday at 8:45 AM and Sundays at 9:00 AM. Admission is free, with voluntary donations accepted for the cloistered community.
