Mudéjar heritage at the Iglesia de San Marcos

Raised at the crossroads between Calle San Luis and Plaza de San Marcos, the Iglesia de San Marcos is one of the most fascinating examples of Sevillian Gothic-Mudéjar architecture. Erected in the mid-14th century on the site of an old Caliphate mosque, the church has survived earthquakes and fires while preserving its unique defensive aesthetic.

Its most iconic element is the imposing Mudéjar tower, built over the former Islamic minaret and decorated with sebka panels in the style of the Giralda. Also notable is its beautiful carved stone portal with a pointed horseshoe arch and decorative battlements, while inside, pointed arches rest on pillars and carved wooden ceilings.

The church opens its doors with free entry in the morning from Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 12:30 and in the afternoons coinciding with parochial worship. It is a key stop to discover the Mudéjar art of the historic center.
