Panoramic views and Islamic fortification at the Castillo de Fatetar

Crowning a rocky hill above the town of Espera, the Castillo de Fatetar is a military fortress of Hispano-Muslim origin built in the 10th century by order of the Caliph Abd al-Rahman III. The fortified enclosure served for centuries as a defensive enclave on the border line of the countryside.

In the outer enclosure, medieval wall sections, the keep (Torre del Homenaje), and underground cisterns are preserved. Its elevated location provides a 360-degree panoramic view over the lagoons of Espera, the Sevillian and Cadiz countryside, and the Sierra de Grazalema.

The self-guided tour of the castle's outer enclosure is free of charge all day. To arrange guided tours that include the interior and the Municipal Archaeological Museum, it is necessary to contact the Ayuntamiento de Espera, with rates starting from 5.50€ per person for groups.
