Visit to the Church of San Agustín and Balbás Altarpiece

The Church of San Agustín de Osuna, erected at the end of the 16th century on the initiative of the IV Count of Ureña as part of the old Augustinian convent, is one of the most striking Baroque spaces of worship in the ducal town. Located in the historic Plaza de Santa Rita, it stands out for its high monumental value and the rich iconographic heritage that it preserves on its altars and walls.

Inside, its spectacular Baroque main altarpiece, work of the famous architect Jerónimo Balbás, carved between 1709 and 1712, stands out above all. In the central niche presides the sculpture of the Virgen de la Esperanza de Remesal, flanked by unique Baroque representations such as the carving of the pregnant Virgin. In addition, the temple historically kept highly cherished processional pieces such as the Santísimo Cristo de la Vera Cruz and the Señor Cautivo.

The church can be visited with free admission during its opening hours for worship. The ideal time to go is from Tuesday to Friday from 5:00 PM to 8:30 PM, or Saturday mornings, taking advantage of the natural light that highlights the gilding of the wood of the presbytery.
